UN chief Guterres 'gravely alarmed' by reports of RSF assault on al-Fashir

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concern over a major attack on Sudan's al-Fashir city by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

He urged RSF leader Lt. General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to halt the assault, warning it could escalate conflict in Darfur.

The RSF and Sudanese army have been at war since April, creating a massive displacement crisis.

The U.S. plans to address the conflict in talks between President Joe Biden and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed.

The UN had earlier called for an end to the siege on al-Fashir and protection of civilians.
